Dante Alighieri

Dante Alighieri, an Italian poet and humanist, played an active role in the political life of his home city of Florence, and wrote the most emotive chapters in the Italian poetry of the Middle Ages, tirelessly drawing on the memory of his electric encounter with Beatrice Portinari, who tragically died in her early twenties. Dante continually mentioned Beatrice Portinari and transposed her image to the terrestrial world in La Vita Nuova and the hereafter in the immortal Divine Comedy.
